Spanish Grammar 107 Personal Pronouns

Personal pronouns replace nouns.

The following subject pronouns refer to the person who ‘does the action’ of the verb.

Singular

YO
TÚ
ÉL, ELLA (formal= USTED)

Plural

NOSOTROS
VOSOTROS
ELLOS, ELLAS (formal = USTEDES)

The third person subject pronouns usted and ustedes are used instead of the second person pronouns to speak formally. For example:

-Señor Espinosa, USTED es muy amable.
-Señores y señoras, el espectáculo de esta noche es para USTEDES

N.B. Because the endings of Spanish verbs already indicate who does the action, personal pronouns are often only used for emphasis, to show contrast, or to avoid confusion.

For example:

YO hablo español muy bien.
TÚ no hablas español con una buena pronunciación.

ÉL baila muy mal.
ELLOS bailan muy bien
